Inlay/Onlay restoration is used to treat tooth decay and damage that cannot be repaired with traditional filling materials. They are scraped from crystalline porcelain material and applied to the tooth using an oral impression. It is an aesthetic treatment applied to teeth where there is insufficient tooth tissue to fill.

Inlays are used to fill spaces in the inner groove of teeth that do not extend to the outer edge. Onlay is the filling material used to repair damage or cavities on the tooth’s outer border or chewing surface.

Steps in inlay restoration treatment:

Initially, the carious tooth is anesthetized with local anesthesia. The dentist removes and cleans the decayed portion of the tooth’s inner surface. After cleaning every problematic area of the tooth, the cavity is measured and porcelain filling material is expected to be fabricated in a laboratory environment to match the tooth’s color and shape. A temporary filling is bonded to the tooth until a porcelain filling can be manufactured. In the final session, the prepared porcelain fillings are bonded to the tooth using special adhesives. Any excess material is removed and polished. After completing all of these steps, inlay/onlay restoration is complete. While inlays/onlays cover the chewing surface of the tooth, they are virtually undetectable and provide a very natural tooth restoration.
